As we're moving along the semester, we tend to forget to keep our mental health in check. At Rutgers BRAIN, we're here to remind you that October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and your mental health is equally important to the other facets of your health.
During this meeting, we started off by talking about NAMI and Mental Illness Awareness Week for 2020. For NAMI, their initiatives are to raise awareness in the public, fight against the stigma, and provide support for those struggling; their movement growing stronger by the year. To find out more about NAMI and their movement, please check out their website to get involved.
Afterwards, we played a Kahoot! to familiarize our BRAINers with a couple of mental illnesses as well as prevalent statistics regarding mental illness. We moved onto discussing the history and different types of treatments for mental illness. In addition, we got to discuss how our mental health could be affected during quarantine. Finally, we got to talk about methods of self-care along with the neuroscience behind it.
Concluding the meeting, we introduced a Instagram challenge called #TakeCareOfYourBRAIN, where we highlight our struggles ever since being quarantined, what we do to cope and take care of ourselves, in addition to mental health and illness resources that have helped us personally and/or that we believe deserve recognition. This challenge is open for our BRAINers to participate in as well!
As always, if you weren't able to attend the meeting, the presentation is linked in the image above. Make sure to follow us at our Instagram, @rutgers_brain, and our Facebook, Rutgers BRAIN, for updates on our next meeting.
